Watch TEDxAustin: Beyond Measure Online

On February 11th, 2012, thinkers, innovators, and connectors gathered at Austin City Music Hall and CompassLearning for a thought-provoking and interactive event.

We want to thank all of you who were there with us even if you weren’t exactly, well, there with us. We hope you enjoyed livestreaming our event from our homepage and engaging with us on your computer, iPad or internet-enabled TV. Even better: we hope you threw a viewing party that helped you connect with like-minded community members, ready to be moved, to debate, and to take action together.

For any questions about how to livestream next year, read our FAQs below. Contact info@tedxaustin.com for more information and to sign up for our mailing list so you can be the first to hear about our application timeline when we post it for next year.

Livestream and Viewing Party FAQs

What time does the conference start?
The conference will begin at 10am and run until 6 PM CST

Who will be speaking?
Our inaugural year we started a little tradition of *not* revealing speakers and performers ahead of time. The intent was to suspend what has become a “Google before you go” approach to events and invite you into that place of complete openness and curiosity. The tradition stuck and though we are busting with excitement, we are again keeping the names of our speakers and performers TOP SECRET. But check back on our website as we begin revealing clues.

What will happen on the big day? Our speakers page will post a full listing, and you’ll also find our program on the home page. We’re impressed with them already, and we know you’ll be too!

What is a non-commercial venue? Why should I know the answer to this?
If you’re thinking of holding a viewing party (and we’re glad you are!), it must be hosted in a non-commercial venue. This could be any public or private venue not used for – you guessed it – commercial purposes. Coffee shops are out, but schools and university auditoriums are in. Even better: they often have the audiovisual equipment you’ll need for the whole TEDxAustin experience. Check out the FAQ for more info.

You know what else counts as a non-commercial venue? Public libraries, which often have projectors available to rent. Also: your home. Going this route is especially good for keeping the snacks flowing and crowd intimate. Unless of course you’ve got a mansion, and then feel free to invite a small army. Use your TV or computer monitor stream (as long as it’s a big computer monitor), or rent a projection screen from a nearby supplier. You can even project onto a blank white wall.

Is there a fee associated with hosting an official viewing party?
Official viewing party hosts do not pay dues or fees to TEDx or TEDxAustin and showing the webcast is free of charge.

What should I do during breaks in the webcast?
We’ll be breaking once for lunch and once for refreshment. Since Austin is a city of big eating, this would be a great time for your guests to break for delicious treats, too. At TEDxAustin, we believe in community collaboration. That’s why we’re betting a potluck might be the best route for both you and your piggy bank. You could even try challenging your guest to make a dish that’s beyond measure – for better. Or worse.

For a non-food idea, how about organizing a discussion session for all of the talks you’ve just listened to? Or a planning group for acting on one of those great big ideas? With like-minded people in the room, you’re sure to do something great.

Who should host a viewing party?
You should, because you’re interested in big topics and are engaged in the world around you, and you have friends who are, too. Another great candidate: anyone affiliated with a community group both in Austin and far away. We think our event will feel relevant to most big thinkers out there who have been wondering at the pace and scale of both innovation and our lives as a whole. Do you teach? Volunteer? Attend a philosophy club? These are all great candidates for a viewing party!

How can I participate right now?
Upload your very own 18 Second TED Talk to youtube and let us know what you believe is Beyond Measure. You might just see yourself up on the livestream the day of!
